The “This Email Contains…” Subject Line
A few years ago I came across a collection of ads written by Ralph Ginzburg.
Ginzburg was an old school space ad legend. His first brush with direct marketing came at age 10 in 1939, when he ordered Dale Carnegie’s book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People," through an ad in Boy’s Life magazine. He read it on the Brooklyn subway, "poring over every syllable of that book, committing it to memory”.
"Of course, reading the book in that way, I didn’t finish it until I was 19," he said.
But you don’t have to wait that long to capitilise on Ginzburg’s genius.
One of his winning ads had the headline “This Ad Contains A Shameless Bribe.”
Simply adapt it for your emails or blogposts in a way that works.
You can say “This Email Contains A Free Gift” or whatever you want to say.
You can tap the desire of the reader, like this: “This Email Contains The Secret To Hassle-Free Recruiting” … effortless exercise… etc.
The power is in the phrase “This Email Contains” and then tell them what’s in there.
Remember, rules can prevent you from doing that which will be profitable. It’s a myth that spamblockers automatically block email lines containing the word ‘free’.
It all depends on your list, your readership, and what works.
The function of an email subject line is only to get the email opened and draw the reader into a conversation.
Squeeze every cent from your content,
Tia D.
