A couple of weeks ago, we’ve started a discussion on how Search Engine Optimization (SEO) forces a shift in email newsletter strategy. Email databases and websites are no longer enough to generate traffic. We also need to maximize social media integration and conversion rates to be email marketing leaders.

Search-friendly, subject-focused microsites were our first strategy. But what else can you do to improve your search rankings?

Connecting to sites, including social/nonprofit ones, is important to appeal to the interests of the targeted web searcher and improve natural search results. But we need to move beyond and think about this more strategically.

Think of the following scenario: you communicate with oncology nurses, and the majority of these nurses are at academic or regional cancer centers: how do you make the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® work for the societal need, the nurses’ needs and, meanwhile, support your brand? If your brand essence includes a focus on compassionate care or impressive, intimate and thorough service to nurses, does it make sense to add a microsite or even an app that makes organizing each group’s annual Walk for the Cure easy and convenient? In sum, can you maximize a few brand-connecting links in order to reinforce your brand essence in a way that appeals to all stakeholders?
