Step 1: Use a simple search and compare how many pages you really have and how many Google thinks you have.

Step 2: Look at Webmaster Central. The closer the numbers, the better.

Step 3: Conduct a full crawl with something like Xenu.

How do you know you’re in trouble? When the crawl date for some of your more important pages are old and not being crawled as frequently as you want. These are classic red flags that should be taken into consideration. You may want to flatten your site or trim off unimportant pages.
